The Limerick Greenway is a Cycle / Walking Greenway which runs adjacent to the town of Abbeyfeale in County Limerick. Currently 40Km in length, it takes in the ruins of Port Castle near the Kerry Border, the old Railway Station at Abbeyfeale Town, Tullig Wood at Templeglantine, the old Railway Station at Devon Road, the old Railway Station at Barnagh, the 115-metre long Barnagh Tunnel, The Barnagh Greenway Hub, Barnagh Viewing Point, Fergusons Viaduct, along with the old Railway Stations at Newcastle West, Ardagh and Rathkeale. Plans are in motion to extend the Greenway into County Kerry by Summer 2022 which will then see it evolve from a 40Km Greenway to an 85Km or 90Km Greenway, taking in the best that both Counties have to offer.
The Limerick Greenway is part of Route #1 “Atlantic Coast” European Greenway Network system which runs from Scandinavia to the Algarve in Portugal. It is designed as an off-road trail intended for use by Cyclists and Walkers alike and which follows the original route of the Great Southern and Western Railway Line from Limerick to Tralee which opened between 1867 - 1880 and eventually closed in 1977.
When visiting the town of Abbeyfeale which is just 1Km from the Greenway, be sure to immerse yourself in the rich culture of its History, Heritage, Music, Dance and Song for which Abbeyfeale has long been associated. Abbeyfeale also has a Heritage Trail which is represented by a series of Heritage Plaques erected at various locations throughout the Town and beyond, and of which will give you a glimpse into the past of People and/or Sites of significant historical importance – be it because of Love or the fight for Freedom or War or more.
As you follow in the footsteps of the Earls of Desmond, Princess Christina di Belgiojoso, Daniel OConnell, Charles Bianconi, and others, be sure to pop in to Leens Hotel or any one of the many Pubs, Restaurants and Café’s for a well-deserved break. And, if you feel like staying a night or two then be sure to visit the multi-award winning Abbeyfeale Town Park, the Glórach Theatre, or FitzGeralds Equestrian Centre.
